Berserk
Guts, a lone mercenary, joins the Band of the Hawk, led by the ambitious Griffith. He becomes Griffith's top warrior but later decides to leave to forge his own path. Griffith, shattered by this loss, acts recklessly and is subsequently imprisoned and brutally tortured. A year later, Guts and the Hawks rescue a broken, mutilated Griffith. In his despair, Griffith accidentally activates a demonic relic called a Behelit, triggering an apocalyptic event called the Eclipse. He is offered godlike power by demonic beings called the God Hand, but at the cost of sacrificing his entire band. Griffith accepts, becoming the demon Femto. The Hawks are slaughtered, Casca is brutally raped by Femto, and Guts loses an eye and an arm. The story flashes forward to Guts, now known as the Black Swordsman, embarking on a relentless quest for vengeance against the God Hand and their demonic apostles. After a year away, Guts returns to find the Band of the Hawk outlawed. He and Casca rescue Griffith, who has been horrifically mutilated and broken. In a moment of despair, Griffith flees and, while attempting suicide, accidentally activates a demonic Behelit with his blood. This triggers the Eclipse, transporting them to a nightmarish realm. There, the God Hand offer Griffith ultimate power in exchange for sacrificing his comrades. Griffith accepts, reborn as the demon Femto. The Hawks are branded and slaughtered by apostles. Femto brutally rapes Casca before Guts, who loses an arm and an eye trying to stop it. Guts alone survives this atrocity, emerging later as the vengeful Black Swordsman sworn to destroy the God Hand and their apostles.
